“best practice” for email?

I will admit that I am somewhat of an email nazi but seriously can you blame me? Is it too much to ask for a descriptive subject line (hi there! and hello! are absolutely unacceptable subjects to me) and a coherent well written (try and leave the ebonics out OK?) email? Apparently I'm not the only one out there with such a request. Check out this link for the full blog. Below are some of my favorite best practices for emails.

-A subject line that clearly defines the subject.

-Body of email only covers one subject.

-Make every attempt to use clear grammar and syntax. I’m not obsessed with “proper” English usage as long as everything is explicitly clear.

-NO HTML EMAIL. Period.

-Bullet points, not paragraphs, make things scanable especially if it’s someone whose attention you want but whose respect or time you don’t have.

For the most part I find people who use email daily in their lives generally follow these rules but those who are not bombarded with at least a dozen emails per day fail to realize how important it is to be as specific and descriptive as possible. Email isn't going away and if you want to play with the big boys I suggest stepping up your game and in this case it's writing better emails!
